Same Sex Mary finds new home for release show
What should've been a triumphant week for Tsvetelina Stefanova and James Adams, instead has been rather trying. Their band, Same Sex Mary, was slated to unveil its new album, "The Second Coming," on Saturday at the Bunkhouse Saloon.
The culmination of the act’s captivating creativity, the show was supposed to be something special. That's how they planned it. The group had gone all out, tapping a local playwright to put together a production featuring a pair of actors to complement the music, which was set to be performed with a seven-piece choir. But then late Monday, the outfit, along with the rest of the scene, learned the downtown venue had closed without warning.
"It just really, really sucks," Stefanova said shortly after the news broke. "We've worked so hard on this. I've printed I don't know how many countless fliers that we've distributed and posters that say it's at the Bunkhouse. We've just put in so much work into this. I just don’t know what to think."
Preparing to issue a new release is always a big deal. But this particular record holds special significance for the band, as the album, recorded at WaveLab Studio in Tucson, Ariz., (in the same space where acts such as DeVotchKa and Calexico have tracked) marks a stylistic departure for the outfit.
That said, the group hoped the release show would be suitably memorable. And, while it looked like those hopes would initially be dashed, now the show, which has since been moved to the Fremont Country Club, will go on. Even better, the capacity has increased at the new venue, which means more people can enjoy the show.
Looks like it the week turned out pretty good after all.
