Record release day is now Friday

Here’s some news that’s likely to have about as much consequence to you, as, say, informing you that the daytime high in Dubai is going to reach 160 degrees — you know, roughly the same as Vegas.

(We kid. A little sun-drenched humor there; it’s only going to be 158 here today.)

Anyhow, sorry to keeping you agonizing in suspense. Here’s the earth-shattering update:

Ahem … hear ye, hear ye, people of the world! The almighty amorphous gods of music have decreed that album release day will no longer take place on Tuesdays. Instead, you will now have to wait until Fridays to purchase whatever pablum happens to be being pushed on the public — well, or listen to it, as the case may be, as let’s be honest, nobody seems to really be “buying” anything anymore these days.

This change is set to take place July 10 (a Friday, duh!), and the shift is arbitrarily — er, make that reportedly, per the pundits at Pitchfork — enacted as an effort to alleviate piracy. Well, and the move was also prompted — according to the folks at the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which represents more than 1,000 record labels and made the call — by a desire to unify the day of the week when new music makes its way to the public worldwide. I don’t know, some crazy country somewhere must be delivering ditties to denizens on Sundays, or something.

Fair enough. Still, we have to wonder, with regard to that first factor — and maybe we’re just being haplessly naive here: With the advent of Spotify and various other streaming options, is there anybody left who still “pirates” music? No, really. Hands up if you know someone. Uh-huh. Thought so. Crickets.

So, anyway, if you’re in an insider-baseball fantasy league, the IFPI issued a press release with a partial breakdown on its site (ifpi.org), along with a FAQ. What’s more, if you’re really intent on filling your brain with knowledge, you can visit newmusicfridays.com, which has a complete breakdown.

That is all.
