Australians Tame Impala thrill with psychedelic pop

The title of Tame Impala’s last record, “Lonerism,” was a literal one: Band majordomo Kevin Parker wrote all but two of the songs solely by himself in addition to playing many of the instruments and recording it on his own.

But if “Lonerism” is singular in vision it’s broad in scope, an enveloping swirl of pop and psychedelia girded by layers of synth and radiant, blood-warming melodies.

It’s one of those rabbit-hole records that’s easy to get lost in, and plenty did: “Lonerism” was named the best album of 2013 by Rolling Stone, among other publications, and was nominated for a Grammy.

Parker has likened the album to Britney Spears singing with the Flaming Lips, which may be a stretch, but then again, going off the deep end is what the dude does best.
