7 big-screen disasters besides ‘San Andreas’ to rock Southern Nevada — VIDEO
In the new earthquake extravaganza “San Andreas,” the Hoover Dam is brought down during a 7.1 quake that would make last week’s tremors feel like a Prius driving past your bedroom.
This leads to several minutes of various actors mispronouncing “Nevada.”
But the area is no stranger to movie mayhem.
Here’s a look back at seven other big-screen disasters to hit Southern Nevada:
“Superman” (1978): The Hoover Dam is destroyed here, too. But it barely counts since all Superman has to do is fly against the Earth’s rotation to turn back time. Lame.
“Mars Attacks” (1996): Superman wasn’t the only alien to visit the area. These flying saucers did a number on the old Landmark before going after Tom Jones.
“2012” (2009): The pending apocalypse opens a giant chasm in the middle of Strip as megaresorts crumble into the abyss.
“Godzilla” (2014): After rescuing his mate from a Yucca Mountain prison, some big praying mantis-looking thing levels the Strip — although, sadly, all the damage was done offscreen.
“The Amazing Colossal Man” (1957): Las Vegas was menaced by another giant — if you can really call what this big hairless dude does menacing — in this cult classic.
“Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” (1992): This Disney sequel uses pretty much the same concept as “The Amazing Colossal Man” only (allegedly) cuter.
“Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” (2015): Possibly the biggest big-screen disaster to ever hit Las Vegas.
