Source found for sought-after salt-rising bread
Salt-rising bread has been a Taste of the Town request periodically over the years — including, recently, by Gracie O’Connor — but I’ve always been told it’s too labor-intensive for commercial bakeries. But Chloe Wertz, who’s with St. Lynn’s Press in Pittsburgh, emailed to say Rising Creek Bakery in Mount Morrison, Pennsylvania, specializes in it and ships it throughout the United States and Canada; the website is www.risingcreekbakery.com.
Wertz said bakery co-owner Jenny Bardwell just co-authored a book, “Salt Rising Bread: Recipes and Heartfelt Stories of a Nearly Lost Appalachian Tradition.”
For Bill Conklin, who’s looking for reader requests for restaurants that sell good-quality fried chicken, Ann Brown recommended M&M Soul Food at 3923 W. Charleston Blvd. (there’s another at 2211 Las Vegas Blvd. South), Roni Miles recommended Lolo’s Chicken and Waffles at 2040 N. Rainbow Blvd. and Dave Levesque recommended the broasted chicken at Streets of New York, which is at 7570 Norman Rockwell Lane and 5135 S. Fort Apache Road.
For Jan Silverman, Brown said Contadina sweet and sour is available at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road, and added that the store carries Chicago-area specialties as well as those beloved of New Yorkers.
For Julia Slovinski, Linda Morelli emailed that Entenmann’s Crumb Cake isn’t sold in Las Vegas, but added that Panera’s crumb cake satisfies her craving for Entenmann’s.
For Ellie Pudlik, who’s looking for fresh free-stone peaches, Judie Chaney noted that these late-summer treats are in season right now, and said she got some at Albertsons.
