How does Burger King’s ‘Whopperrito’ really measure up?

Can’t decide between a juicy cheeseburger or a spicy burrito for lunch? With Burger King’s newly introduced “Whopperrito,” hungry diners can truly “have it their way” by indulging in both items at the same time.

Burger King’s Whopperrito is exactly what its name implies — a classic Whopper burger rolled up and served as a burrito.

When I saw Burger King released the burger-burrito hybrid creation this week, I was genuinely excited to try it and purposely sought out an eatery to do so. Unfortunately, within the first few bites of the Whopperrito, I quickly came to the realization that the high hopes I had for the new food item were not going to be met.

Having only seen photos of the Whopperrito prior to trying it, I automatically expected it to be exactly like the similar concept McDonald’s released a few years back — the Mac Snack Wrap — which featured a smaller version of the classic Big Mac served in a tortilla wrap. Sadly that wasn’t the case.

The two biggest problems with the Whopperrito come down to the sauce and the meat. Rather than keeping all the same toppings served on the iconic Whopper (i.e. ketchup and mayonnaise), Burger King opted for a spicy queso sauce (or in some places, BK refers to it as “taco sauce”) that doesn’t mix well with the other flavors in the burger. For a queso sauce, I didn’t taste any cheese flavor whatsoever, rather an abundance of unnecessary spicy heat is all that came out of it. Likewise, instead of ground taco meat as a normal burrito would have, the Whopperrito is served with an entire beef patty torn into large strips of meat, which made it pretty difficult to eat at times.

And while I hope this goes without saying, I definitely wouldn’t recommend attempting to eat the Whopperrito while driving.

Though it wasn’t the best tasting item I’ve ever had from a fast food joint, at $2.99 each, it was fillling. The likeliness that I would purchase the Whopperrito again is pretty slim. However, if I did, and I certainly wouldn’t purposely seek out a Burger King again to do so, the only way I would ever order it would be if they allowed a substitution for the horrible spicy queso sauce for regular mayonnaise and ketchup. Because when does anyone ever want a spicy cheeseburger?
