Hunt begins for Sugardale hot dog

I’m leading with a request this week, because it involves a little hometown pride.

On the heels of the announcement that, following its own March Madness bracket, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council had named the Sugardale hot dog served in a foil packet at the Cleveland Indians’ Progressive Field as the best baseball dog in the country, Taste of the Town reader and former fellow Clevelander Roger J. Henning wonders if anyone knows of local sources for the dogs or their traditional accompaniment, Bertman Ball Park Mustard.

And I would’ve thought the winner would be Kahn’s, the Wiener the World Awaited.

In case you’re wondering, the runners-up were considerably more fancy: the 24-inch, 3-pound Texas Rangers Boomstick; the flash-fried, footlong Dixie Dog (topped with pulled pork, barbecue sauce and slaw) of the Atlanta Braves; and the Detroit Tigers’ Coney Dog, topped with chili, cheese and onions. …

More news of note for Midwest-hailing Taste of the Town readers: After years of fielding requests for kringle, a specialty of Racine, Wis., I was surprised to spot it just inside the entrance to Trader Joe’s at Sunset Road and Green Valley Parkway in Henderson. It’s made by O.H. Danish Bakery in Racine. Never having been to Racine I can’t tell you whether it traveled well, but I thought the pecan kringle I bought was pretty good. It was $7.99.

Both were favorites for many years.”
