Get the kids cookin’ this summer

Looking for something for the kids to do this summer? Why not send them to classes that could end up benefiting Mom and Dad?

Heh-heh, you can tell we’re parents.

Ulterior motives aside, at least two local businesses are offering cooking classes for kids this summer.

Megan Romano, chef/owner of Chocolate & Spice at 7293 W. Sahara Ave., will start her summer series June 10 with a class on making fresh pasta, finishing with seasonal garden vegetables; each participant will create his or her own entree (we see a dinner in somebody’s future …).

If you’re looking for dessert, Romano will teach the kids how to make ice cream on June 24. Snacks will be covered by the class in mini-chicken potpies, mini-meatballs and mini-mac and cheese on July 8, followed by seasonal sorbets on July 22.

Classes, which are open to kids 4 and older, are $25, or $45 for two if you buy them at the same time. They begin at 3 p.m., and parents must be present during the entire session. While walk-ins are welcome if space is available, reservations are advised and can be made by emailing megan@chefmeganromano.com.

Wonderland Bakery, at 2010 Festival Plaza Drive in Downtown Summerlin, is planning a series of three-day baking and decorating classes called Culinary Camp. They start with Fun with Fondant from 1 to 3 p.m. June 16-18, in which kids will make a dozen cupcakes, a four-cupcake cake and a 6-inch cake.

In Chocolate Lovers’ Dream from 1 to 3 p.m. June 23-25, they’ll make a dozen chocolate lollipops, a lollipop tower, a dozen chocolate-dipped strawberries and a dozen Oreo pops.

And in Crazy About Cupcakes from 1 to 3 p.m. July 14-16, they’ll make a dozen cupcakes, three pint-sized cupcakes in a jar, a dozen cupcake brownies on a stick and six cupcake cookie decorating kits.

Each three-day series, which includes a Wonderland apron, T-shirt, snack and beverage, is $295 per person and open to kids 5 and older; parents are welcome as well. Call 702-363-3333 for further details.
