Nevada Ballet launches season with ‘Jewels’
Nevada Ballet Theatre launches its 2012-13 season with George Balanchine's three-part masterwork "Jewels." NBT will be joined by the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Ballet West.
Set to live music, this full-length ballet will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and 1 p.m. Oct. 14 at the company's new performance home in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, 361 Symphony Park Ave. Tickets range from $35 to $128 (plus fees) and can be ordered by calling The Smith Center box office at 749-2000 or by visiting www.nevadaballet.org. Season tickets are currently on sale and individual tickets for "Jewels" go on sale Aug. 16.
The New York City Ballet premiered the work in 1967, with the gemstone-inspired ballet becoming a popular box office sensation. Nevada Ballet Theatre's presentation combines the artistry of three companies, each performing one act. The performance marks the first time this famous triptych ballet has been executed by three ballet companies in a single show.
The event is sponsored by New York jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels. Balanchine was inspired after visiting the jeweler to create an abstract ballet around the beauty of jewels.
The company's new season also will include an all-new production of "The Nutcracker," Dec. 15-23; performances by the Joffrey Ballet, Jan. 22-23; performances by New York City Ballet Moves, March 5-6, co-presented with The Smith Center; "The Studio Series: Extending Boundaries," March 19-24; and "Romeo & Juliet," May 11-12.
