LOS ANGELES — Michael Fassbender is “in blood stepp’d in so far” that there’s no going in back.

StudioCanal UK has released the first trailer for director Justin Kurzel’s highly anticipated reimagining of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”

Fassbender plays the Scottish lord turned traitor who stops at nothing to become king, driven partly by Lady Macbeth’s (played by Marion Cotillard) insatiable ambition

The film premiered to rave reviews at last month’s Cannes Film Festival. “Fearsomely visceral and impeccably performed, it’s a brisk, bracing update, even as it remains exquisitely in period,” Variety film critic Guy Lodge wrote.

“Macbeth” will be released in the U.K. on October 2. The Weinstein Company will release the adaptation in the U.S. this fall.
