Entertainment Diet: Jason Feinberg
Talking about what Jason Feinberg watches, listens to, reads and does in his spare time can be tricky, mostly because “spare time” is a sort of elastic concept for Feinberg.
Feinberg, 46, is co-anchor of “Fox 5 News This Morning,” which airs weekdays from 7 to 9 a.m. on KVVU-TV, Channel 5. He’s also a co-host of “More” weekdays from 9 to 10 a.m. and also can be seen filling in occasionally on other KVVU news programs.
So, Feinberg’s work schedule isn’t one that always lends itself to standing entertainment pursuits. But whenever he can, Feinberg, who has lived in Las Vegas for 10 years — he moved here from Los Angeles, where he was a correspondent for E! News — makes it a point to take advantage of the best entertainment Las Vegas can offer.
MOVIES
I can’t stay home and watch movies at home. It has to be (at the) movies, where I have my popcorn, which, by the way, makes me sick, but it tastes great, and I pay the consequences later. So I definitely am a fan of going to the theater. I gravitate toward comedies. If I can get anything like a “Sixteen Candles” or an “Animal House” or “There’s Something About Mary,” obviously, those are older, but I’ll always gravitate toward those movies first. I’m not a big fan of movies where there’s a bomb that’s ticking and you have 10 seconds to cut the white wire or the green or blue one and save the world.
TELEVISION
It’s funny because I’m on TV, but I don’t watch a lot of TV. It has to be a really good show. I can’t seem to get into “Game of Thrones” like everybody else, but I did love “Breaking Bad.” My favorite of all time is still “South Park.” Those guys are brilliant. It’s, like, they have episodes that you think are crazy, but then life imitates them. … First and foremost, I love football. So right now I’m in the offseason, but I don’t miss a game. So “Monday Night Football,” “Thursday Night Football” and all day Sunday. I don’t have to watch college (football), but I will if nothing else is going on. I like football, I can tolerate baseball and I like hockey. So sports is No. 1.
BOOKS
I use my book time to do crosswords. So I’ll do the R-J’s on Sunday. I’ll do the Sun’s and the New York Times’ … I’ll go to, like, Starbucks and I’ll look for the (newspaper) rack and just stalk the crosswords. … It’s strange, but I guess maybe it’s because I read three hours a day. I do like the idea of fiction, I really do. I think there’s a lot of great books. I just don’t read them.
DINING
My go-to place is South Point. I go to Silverado Steakhouse. That’s sort of my local good restaurant. I mean, I would prefer Michael’s (Gourmet Room), but it’s just very expensive. … Then on Saturday night, I just went to STK at Cosmo. What’s funny is there were four of us and only one of us got steak. The rest got fish and chicken. For me, it’s more about the atmosphere, and they have a great DJ that plays music a little loud, but, overall, it’s a good vibe there. … Also, I Love Sushi on Eastern, I go there a lot.
MUSIC
I definitely gravitate to ’70s rock. So every time Little River Band comes, every time The Guess Who comes, every time Jefferson Starship comes, every time Three Dog Night comes, I’m there. So classic rock is my first choice. Then, I go to the Philharmonic a lot. I’m really eclectic in my music choices. If you look at my playlists, it’s everything from Barbra Streisand to N.W.A. Good music is good music.
THEATER
I travel a lot, too. I actually was just in Israel for the first time. That was really cool, but, before that, I went to New York. … I stayed like three nights in New York and I saw three Broadway shows in three nights. I saw “Fun Home,” then I saw “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Then I saw a really dark one with Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams called “Blackbird.” … Then, in Vegas, I saw “Kinky Boots” and “The Book of Mormon.” I like The Smith Center.
