Comedy great Eddie Izzard coming to the Palms

Bruce Jenner might have had an easier time with coming out of the straight-transgender closet if he hadn’t waited so late in life, says the world’s most successful “executive transvestite” Eddie Izzard.

“If I had to come out with that amount of press scrutiny, it would have been really trippy,” Izzard said Monday.

Izzard came out 30 years ago as a straight man/comedian/actor/political activist who enjoys dressing in women’s clothes onstage, at dinner, and whenever the mood strikes.

“No one seems to be terribly bothered by it, which is great,” Izzard said of his own life.

“For young people,” he gently advised: “Come out when you’re in your teenage years or your early 20s. Come out young. Don’t (wait to) come out in your later stages. Get it out of the way early on. It’s easier to grow, once the decades go by.”

Izzard has been busy touring the world, so he stressed to me he had not seen Jenner’s coming-out interview, nor much of the media hubbub. So he was speaking generally about the subject.

Izzard, one of the world’s comedy greats, will perform June 12-13 at the Palms’ Pearl ($65-$95).
