Crystal Hefner revels in her role as queen of the Mansion
Crystal Hefner has been sharing YouTube videos in which she gives viewers giddy tours of the Playboy Mansion: Baby monkeys; the Hef bedroom; the van room.
In the videos, looking happy and content in the opulence of a storied California castle, the blonde 29-year-old daughter of British entertainers spins joyfully, like a girl, in the lush green yard, giving the impression she is the unbothered, uncontested queen of the mansion.
I talk to Hefner sometimes. She called. I put it to her like this: Does she feel like the queen of the mansion?
“It is only Hef and I who live here, so it is like a big playground for me,” Hefner said, in a very upbeat mood, as always with me.
She will head back to Las Vegas Saturday to DJ again at Rehab pool party in the Hard Rock Hotel.
I asked her about the Mickey Mouse story she tells in one of her videos. She revisited it for us:
“We went to Disneyland, and Hef interacted with Mickey Mouse, and they told each other they were each other’s idols. It was really cute,” Hefner told me.
“I was like, ‘OK, I can die now,’ just seeing that, because that’s the coolest thing ever. I love Disneyland. And Hef loves Disneyland. And I love Hef.”
Hef started as a cartoonist, she reminded me. (I had forgotten, somehow.)
“I think he can relate to Disney, and building a dream,” she said.
So this was the moment I chose to ask about Hugh Hefner’s dream, because his former girlfriend, among many, Holly Madison, 35, wrote a book of harsh accusations against the legacy of that dream.
Madison, in “Down the Rabbit Hole,” accuses her ex, 89, of encouraging Quaalude-popping for sex, enforcing female curfews, and instituting other control measures to keep women answering his beck and call.
“I don’t really know her,” Crystal Hefner said of Madison. “She moved out seven years ago. So I don’t think about it. I just keep to myself. I’m happy and want to stay that way.”
She did sound happy on the phone even during this part of the call. She rolled with the Madison question.
“No worries, Hef and I are really happy. That’s all that matters,” she said.
How happy? They hosted another Fourth of July party over the weekend, featuring a government-permit fireworks show.
And she will sample her husband’s voice in an upcoming song and music video. The sample is based on his answer to a question people pose to him. “What’s your best pickup line?”
His best pickup line, she said, is, “My name’s Hugh Hefner.’”
“So we made a song around that. It’s really cool,” she said.
But this weekend, she’ll leave the confines of her ornate mansion to DJ at Rehab and host its $100,000 summerlong bikini contest.
She likes life at Rehab.
“It feels like a home away from home, just a bunch of hot girls in bikinis.”
