Yes, David Spade played ‘Joe Dirt,’ but he cleans up real nice

Whenever David Spade introduces a girlfriend to his sister-in-law and brother, fashion designers Kate and Andy Spade, that girlfriend gets a little nervous, Spade says.

“When I go out with a girl and they see Kate, they always dress up really nicely. Even for my brother. Because my brother (worked for Kate), then he did Jack Spade, and he works on a J. Crew line,” Spade said.

I asked David just how aware his dates have been of his fashion family.

“They’re very aware of them,” he said. “Girls know more than I do about them. When they know they’re going to see them, they’re on their best behavior.”

Spade is back in town, performing tonight and Friday and Saturday at The Venetian.

Spade is a stylish dresser, despite his fame in “Joe Dirt” and that muscle car he drives around Hollywood. But he tries not to overdo it.

“I don’t think it’s funny to be the best-dressed, perfect comedian. It’s more like man of the people.”

But he did wear a fancy leather coat to a red carpet recently, or as he put it: “I got in too much of a little bit of a Justin Theroux look.”

Will Ferrell got all the media attention on that carpet. Ferrell was wearing a suit made out of dollar bills.

BILL MAHER: BETTING ON HILLARY

My Thursday interview with Bill Maher about President Obama and weed was so incredibly popular, I thought I’d give you Bill Maher Part Deux, since he performs tonight and Sunday at the Palms.

I asked him the most obvious question in the world: Who does he think will win the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush?

“Well, it’s definitely going to be Hillary” who earns the Democratic nomination, he said. “I don’t know about Jeb, but it could be Jeb” who snags the GOP nomination.

“Hillary wins (the presidency), because I think America does not follow the issues too closely, but it does know we are ready for a woman, much like visitors to Las Vegas: ready for a woman.

“And she’s a centrist. She’s not somebody who alienates that great swath of Americans in the middle who can get cold feet about somebody who’s a little too radical.”

I told Maher I wondered if he might be wrong, if perhaps the political pendulum will swing toward Republicans, if that party ever stops punching itself in the face.

“Yeah,” he said with an open mind. “And the Democrats have gotten by for so long on counting on the Republicans to be so nuts that the Democrats look good by comparison. But that can be a dangerous crutch.

“I would love the Democrats to buddy up to the concept of actually coming up with an idea. Can you tell me what their idea is? Can you tell me what they’re proposing to do for the American people this election? Because I can’t.

“All I hear is income inequality is bad, and the Koch brothers are rich and mean. Well, those things are true, but I don’t know if they’re enough to get people to vote for you.”

FEED ME

If you’re reading this online, go read my blogs. They’re so new, they’re not even called “blogs” anymore. They’re called “feeds.” How can you possibly resist these headlines?

“Bill Maher: Obama is right, how about some weed, Vegas?”

“Fly the really, really, really friendly skies” (about Vegas’ new Mile High Club plane service).

And “Ask Heidi Anything: Vegas’ best pizza is …”

I also started a running piece called “Quick Hit Memoirs.” Read the first one. It’s good. If you’d like to submit yours, email me. Please and thanks.
