RED SQUARE

Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 632-7407

Red Square isn't exactly authentic -- though, to be fair, an authentic Russian restaurant would be a tough sell on the Strip -- but it's gorgeous inside and a lot of fun and serves good food to boot. Particularly worthy of note: the grilled Caesar salad, steak tartare, chicken Kiev, Adzhika Pork and Strawberries Romanoff. (7/20/07)

Overall: B $$$

THE CAPITAL GRILLE

Fashion Show mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. South; 932-6631

The Capital Grille is the kind of steakhouse they're not building much of anymore, but contemporary touches help this old-school-style spot feel like anything but a throwback. Onion soup and a dry-aged steak au poivre with Coirvoisier cream were both excellent but on the salty side; also excellent (but not too salty) were the prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella, creamed spinach and roasted chicken. Overall: A- $$$$

THE NEW ORLEANS CONNECTION

9711 S. Eastern Ave.; 492-1650

The Katrina diaspora delivered good Cajun and Creole restaurants to many parts of the country and in Las Vegas it's represented by The New Orleans Connection. Most of what we had was excellent renditions of Louisiana classics -- such as Crawfish Etoufee, fried alligator, red beans and rice, dirty rice and jambalaya -- and we also liked something a little more offbeat, some sweet potato hush puppies dusted with powdered sugar, which were designated a side but sweet enough to serve as dessert.
