Strip Tips: From dancing to taxes

This week is full of special days, starting with today, Friday the 13th. The centennial anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic will pass in a couple of days, and if you think that's irrelevant to the Strip, you're wrong. Also, don't forget to pay your taxes. Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay will help.

Dance auditions

"So You Think You Can Dance" fans have the chance to act a little fanatical when the ABC show conducts callback auditions today at Planet Hollywood. Average people like you and me will be showing off their dancing abilities to win a slot on the ninth season of the TV show at the Theatre of Performing Arts through 8 p.m. The auditions are not open to the public, but if you're up for doing some creepy lurking, you can probably catch sight of a judge or two -- judge Nigel Lythgoe should be there, along with Mary Murphy, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen, Lil' C and Tyce Diorio.

Titanic exhibit

Sunday marks the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. If you're feeling a little macabre this weekend, you can commemorate the anniversary with a visit to "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" at the Luxor. The attraction is somewhat interactive with parts of it designed to look like the interior of the infamous ship. On display are more than 20 artifacts and sections of the Grand Staircase. A 15-ton piece of the ship's hull, called the "Big Piece" is on display, as well. It is the largest piece of the Titanic ever recovered. Admission is $32, but locals with ID can get in for $29, and admission for children ages 4 to 12 is $24. For more information, visit luxor.com.

Special stamp

Magicians and tiger whisperers Siegfried & Roy unveiled a "Save Vanishing Species" stamp this week. It is on sale at post offices and retail outlets at The Mirage and Mandalay Bay. Proceeds from the commemorative stamp will benefit the Wildlife Without Borders Multinational Species Conservation Funds, which tries to preserve endangered species, including tigers.

Question

Will Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay be doing their annual tax promotion?

Yes, from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday you can receive a coupon for free admission to Shark Reef Aquarium just by paying your taxes. Anyone who mails their federal tax return at the post office station in the South Convention Center parking lot, near the Shark Reef entrance, will get a voucher good for admission to the attraction.
