SkinnyFATS piles on the choices for every type of eater
Do you have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, duking it out to determine whether you make wise dining choices or decadent ones? Or maybe you’re a big-appetite rock star dating a gluten-free supermodel searching for a place she can eat that won’t leave you hungry? Please everyone with a visit to SkinnyFATS, where the menu is divided into a healthy and a happy side.
Inside the cozy, handpainted reclaimed wood dining room at the Dean Martin Drive location, we sampled a bit of each end of the spectrum. From the healthy side, the Nice to Greek You featured a flatbread square topped with grilled chicken, cucumber, tomato, red onion, olives, feta and tzatziki, artfully drizzled with balsamic. From the happy side, the Chickity China was a slaw salad with Pan-Asian citrus dressing topped with teriyaki chicken, almonds and scallions, and on this day, fresh pineapple. Other options include the healthy Chickhummm, grilled chicken, sprouts, tomato, red onion and hummus on a wheat bun; and the not-so-healthy Meltdown, two quarter-pound beef patties topped in caramelized onions, cheese, tomato and spicy aioli on sourdough.
The breakfast menu, which is available all day, does a better job of showing off the poles from one side of the menu to the other. The dishes on the healthy side use egg whites, sugar-free syrup and pack waffles and pancakes with protein and whole wheat. On the happy side, you’ll find artery-clogging fun such as #Merica, a shaved New York strip chicken fried over biscuits and gravy with three eggs; Chickawaffadopolis, fried chicken tenders over a buttermilk waffle with syrup; and REDiculous, a red velvet waffle covered in cream cheese frosting, berries and chocolate with applewood smoked bacon.
The children’s menu sticks with the theme, offering kids happy choices such as the Mini Moo, a quarter-pound burger big enough to satisfy an adult; and Clucky Toes breaded fried chicken tenders. Healthy options for kids include Juan Cluck, a whole wheat chicken taco; and Skinny Cluck, seared chicken tenders with fruit, not fries.
Speaking of fries, there are plenty to choose from with traditional and sweet potato fries and truffle fries that are coated in truffle oil. Brown rice, fruit, salad and slaw round out the side options, and you can accompany your meal with a warm cookie, a milkshake or a cold-pressed juice. Boylan Bottling supplies the sodas that are served in cups with a happy meter. If your cup’s half full, it’s a “good day. Saw the police and they rolled right past me.”
But why drink soda, even with real cane sugar, when they have a dispenser filled with free water infused with lemon and cucumber?
Plan ahead if you want to eat in the dining room because tables are limited, and the place gets crowded. Patrons can order at the counter, online at skinnyfats.com or through the restaurant’s app available in Apple and Android versions.
