Rock in Rio: Top 5 moments from Day One
There was plenty to see and do at Rock in Rio. Here are five of the top moments from Day One:
5. The 17-piece SpokFrevo Orquestra from Brazil, wowing listeners on one of the Rock Street stages deep in the bowels of the festival.
4. Smallpools covering College’s “A Real Hero” from the “Drive” soundtrack and New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give.” Their hit “Dreaming” isn’t too shabby, either.
3. Taylor Momsen is a badass. You may have heard her band, The Pretty Reckless. But once you see her live, shaking her blond locks, writhing onstage and hurling F-bombs backed by a bunch of hairy dudes who, if you didn’t know better, you’d swear were holding her against her will, you’ll never believe she once was Cindy Lou Who in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and Jenny “Little J” Humphrey on “Gossip Girl.”
2. The way No Doubt melted away the years. Seeing Gwen Stefani prowling the massive stage, you’d never believe she’s a 45-year-old mother of three and a coach on “The Voice.” Rolling through a cavalcade of their hits — “Hella Good,” “It’s My Life,” “Hey Baby,” “Don’t Speak,” etc. — this could have been a memorable chilly night from a dozen years ago.
1. Anything Gary Clark Jr. did. Seriously, the Austin, Texas-based blues-rock guitarist plays as though he has three hands. The only downside to his blistering seven-song set was its start time — 7 p.m. on the secondary stage — which meant many ticketholders hadn’t even arrived.
