Lou Reed, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails nominated for HOF induction

Lou Reed, The Smiths, Green Day and Nine Inch Nails are among the nominees for the 2015 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Many have a fighting chance due to being in recent news. Lou Reed passed away October 2014 at age 71 but Reed biographer and Rolling Stone contributor Anthony DeCurtis, said of his nomination, “this nomination acknowledges not just the significance of his solo career, but the huge influence he exerted on younger generations of artists.” The Velvet Underground were inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1996.

The Smiths have been disbanded since 1987, followed by the lengthy solo career of Morrisey. The 55-year-old British frontman revealed Tuesday that he’s been undergoing treatments for cancer and canceled his upcoming tour. He’s also been working on a novel.

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor has collaborated with former live bandmate Atticus Ross the compose film scores for David Fincher movies, including “The Social Network,” in which he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for best original score, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” and the recently released “Gone Girl,” starring Ben Affleck.

First-time nominees Green Day have sold over 75 million albums with hit songs “Basket Case,” “Holiday” and “American Idiot” topping the charts for months.

Among others on the list below are Sting, who was inducted in 2003 with The Police, rap group N.W.A., German electronic band Kraftwerk and rockers Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.

Joel Peresman, CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation said this year’s ballot “represents a broad, diverse group of artists and demonstrates how rock ‘n’ roll has evolved over the years.”

Six of the nominees are first-timers. To decide the winner, 700 artists, historians and music-industry professionals vote. The public can vote online through Dec. 9.

The ceremony will be held April 18 in Clevelend, Ohio at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
