Locals only: Packin’ that sugar shack

If you look closely enough, almost everything has a “national day,” and many of them don’t amount to much.

Thursday, for example, is National Peach Ice Cream Day and National Yellow Pig Day.

But you’d have to be a sucker to miss Sunday’s National Lollipop Day celebration.

See what we did there?

Nia Sanchez, Nevada’s recently crowned Miss USA, will sign autographs and pose for photos from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Sugar Factory Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Suite 145.

Half of all lollipop sales Sunday at the Town Square location will be donated to The Shade Tree shelter for endangered women, their children and pets.

Also on Sunday, Sugar Factory’s Couture Pops will be on sale for 50 percent off. So if you’ve ever balked at the idea of paying $25 for a lollipop, you’ll be able to take one home for just $12.50.

Say hey, old days

Who’s got top-casino bragging rights, the Strip or Glitter Gulch? Tourists and locals alike have debated the question for decades, but the latest round gets underway at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road, when gaming expert David G. Schwartz, director of UNLV’s Center for Gaming Research, will discuss casino history and sign his books “Roll the Bones” and “Grandissimo.” For more information on the free “Vintage Vegas” program, call 702-507-3459 or visit www.lvccld.org.

In advance of Aug. 1 concert by the Goo Goo Dolls, Daughtry and the Plain White Tees, the Grand Cafe at Red Rock Resort has introduced four themed specials: the appetizers SLIDErs (above, $9), Start of Something Good chicken wings ($9) and Slow It Down braised short ribs ($12) and It’s Not Over, a red-velvet brownie sundae ($5). They’re available through the concert date.

Miles to go

Chandler Judkins’ trumpet is a featured part of Stratosphere headliner Frankie Moreno’s marchin’ band. But he and drummer Brian Czach slow down to simmer on a reprise of their March collaboration “The Sounds of Miles Davis” from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Jalisco Cantina 6450 S. Durango Drive. There is no cover.

Fizzy, feisty

She opened for Miley Cyrus back in March at the MGM Grand, and Sky Ferreria also somehow managed to one-up Cyrus in terms of shock value by posing nude on the cover of her debut, “Night Time, My Time.” Sensationalism aside, Ferreria’s electro pop is plenty titillating with her baring just her emotions in place of her flesh. See her at 10 p.m. Friday at Downtown Container Park, 707 Fremont St. Free; call 637-4244.
