‘Hunger Games’ theme parks may be coming sooner than you think

As it takes another step beyond the big screen, the "Hunger Games" series is getting closer and closer to being a real thing.

Soon, "Hunger Games" fans might even be able to physically visit District 12, and not just in their imagination.

Calif.-based Lionsgate Entertainment has at least two projects underway for theme parks based on the archaic world of Katniss Everdeen, the New York Times reported.

The first two parks, in Atlanta and China, will feature roller coasters and other attractions based on the popular series, the New York Times reported.

Unlike theme parks owned by Disney or Universal Studios, "Hunger Games" parent company Lionsgate Entertainment is not building these parks itself. Instead, they plan to license the construction to developers, the report said.

The Atlanta park will be named  Avatron Smart Park, cost about $625 million and open sometime in 2019.

Specific details on the two parks are not yet final, but another Lionsgate Entertainment zone in the United Arab Emirates is even closer to opening, the report said. The UAE park will open in 2016, with zones dedicated to "Step Up" and "Divergent" as well as a "District 12" area, with costumed characters and the bakery of Peeta Mellark.
