I Love Hip Hop lives up to its name with party

I Love Hip Hop celebrates the musical genre on the third Sunday of the month at the Beauty Bar, 517 Fremont St. This month's party, which starts at 8 p.m., is bigger and even more vibrant as a way to kick off Hip Hop Appreciation Week.

Performers will include Akil from Jurassic 5, The Chapter Crew, RNR, Verbal Ase, JR, Duwop Rose, The Vinylist and Lord Q, among others.

There also will be urban vendors, a live painting by Iceberg Slick and a documentary that takes people through the history of hip-hop culture.

The free event is starting two hours earlier than usual to accommodate all of the activities.

Organizers say I Love Hip Hop started as a way to draw attention to the "positive vibe" of hip-hop music, which often is confused with the harder-edged rap. For further details, call 785-8819.

Chorale sets Memorial Day 'Extravaganza'

The patriotic-themed program will include a special candlelight ceremony honoring those lost in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senior U.S. District Judge Lloyd George will narrate the program that will pair the Nevada Pops, under the direction of Richard McGee, with Nellis Air Force Base and local ROTC units.
