Eastside Cannery opens its doors

New casino opens: Despite the economic slowdown and several Las Vegas hotel-casino projects put on hold, the new Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel will open its doors to the public today, Aug. 28, at 8 p.m.

Located on what is called the Boulder Highway Strip, the $250-million resort features a 16-story tower of bronze, glass and steel, with a distinctive saw-tooth roofline. The casino offers more than 2,100 of the very latest and most popular slot machines, 26 table games, a 450-seat bingo hall, live keno lounge, a first-class poker room and a Race and Sports Book.

There is also 20,000 square feet of ballroom and meeting space and the main ballroom of 17,000 square feet can be divided into five rooms. There are two additional meeting rooms, as well as two boardrooms located near the main ballroom.

If you get hungry, not to worry. You can fill your tummys with prime rib served at Carve or seafood ceviche at Casa Cocina. For those of you who prefer a buffet, Sweet Lucy’s Tableside Buffet is your destination. Or there’s always The Deli for you race and sports book fans. And let’s not forget Snaps 24-Hour Café, the resort’s coffee shop. Slated to make its debut in the fall is a lounge and kitchen called ONE SIX. Set atop the 16th floor, I’m told the ONE SIX will feature an amazing view of the Las Vegas skyline.

The more than 300 oversized rooms and suites showcase floor-to-ceiling glass windows, providing spectacular views of the nearby mountains and the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip. Guest rooms are 450 square feet, and if you decide on any of the 600-square-foot corner window suites, you’ll be treated to an exceptional view while soaking in the in-room spas. Of course, you can always impress your partner by staying in one of the five 900-square-foot executive suites on the top floor.

When was the last time Binion’s Gambling Hall downtown has been in the news? Not since it sold its World Series of Poker and the famous $1 Million Display. So it’s nice to report that the million-dollar display has returned and with a new look. The new display holds exactly $1 million and is structured in a pyramid design of acrylic glass boxes filled with cash denominations ranging from ones to $100 bills. The display is set up on a poker table, evoking the nostalgia of the Binion’s poker heritage

The $1 Million Display is located in the casino near the Club Binion’s Booth. Guests who join Club Binion’s receive $25 in slot play or table game non-negotiable chips for just $20 plus a free photo with the $1 million. The display is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Binion’s has also made other changes during its recent remodeling and refurbishment of the property, improving its gaming odds on blackjack and craps, adding new table games, reconfiguring the casino floor, and implementing a new poker comp policy offering players $2 per hour of live play. For all of you who miss the old Binion’s, you might want to revisit the legendary casino.

This is for the kids: If you live in the Las Vegas area, you’re invited to participate in a free National Football League Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition. Charleston Heights Community School will hold the competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 6438 Celeste Ave. For advance registration forms or directions to Charleston Heights Community School, call (702) 229-4440. Girls and boys compete separately in four different age divisions, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15. Each participant is allowed one punt, one pass and one placekick. Scores are based on both distance and accuracy.

Each youth must present a copy of his or her birth certificate upon check-in. A parent or guardian must be present to sign the permission to participate and liability waiver. No football shoes, cleats or turf shoes may be used during the competition. Only gym shoes with soft soles will be permitted (no bare feet). All other equipment will be provided. Each youth may participate in only one local competition. First-place winners in each age bracket will advance to the sectional competition, to be held Nov. 1. Sectional winners advance to team championships, which take place in NFL team stadiums in November and December. Top scorers from these championships will advance to the national finals, to be held at an NFL playoff game in January. Put your dancing shoes on: What better to celebrate the last holiday of the summer than by dancing to music performed by the Carl Grove Combo? It all takes place on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Charleston Heights Arts Center’s air-conditioned ballroom located at 800 S. Brush St., one block west of Decatur and north of West Charleston Boulevard. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 on performance day. Group discounts are available. Call (702) 229-6383 for information.

The combo’s play list includes favorite songs from the 1940s to ‘70s, from swing and foxtrots to Latin and jazz. Marsha K will provide the vocals. Tenor saxophonist Carl Grove, trumpet and flugelhorn player Dick Guider, drummer Bob Grundy and keyboardist Peter Urquidi all have extensive resumes. Grove played with the U.S. Navy band before moving on to the Gene Krupa, Woody Herman and Russ Morgan orchestras. Guider, former director of music for the Clark County School District, Grundy and Urquidi are long-time performers in local showrooms and lounges. Should be a lot of fun and the price is right.

Good luck and I'll see you on the Strip. And don't forget to check out eNeon each Thursday by subscribing (free of charge) to the Review-Journal's weekly newsletter.
