Breast Cancer Month Events
The following activities and tie-ins are planned in observance of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
■ Digital screening mammograms will be offered for $75 to uninsured or underinsured women ages 40 or older at these locations: Breast Center at Sunrise, 3006 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 250 (784-7870); Southern Hills Hospital, 9300 W. Sunset Road (880-2900); and Red Rock Radiology, 7130 Smoke Ranch Road (731-2888). The program will be available Friday-Oct. 31.
■ Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas will kick off the Las Vegas leg of Hard Rock International's worldwide "Pinktober" campaign with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Holly Madison at 12:30 p.m. Friday at 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The "Pinktober" campaign will feature merchandise available for sale at Hard Rock properties, with a portion of proceeds being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (www.hardrock.com/lasvegas).
■ University of Nevada, Las Vegas women's soccer vs. New Mexico Breast Cancer Awareness Night will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Peter Johann Memorial Field, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. Attendees who wear pink will be admitted for $1. "Dig Pink," presented by Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, UNLV volleyball vs. Colorado State will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 9 at Cox Pavilion, Tropicana Avenue and Swenson Street. Attendees who wear pink will be admitted for $1. At the volleyball game, the Komen Foundation will have a donation table set up to help support breast cancer research.
■ The American Cancer Society's 11th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk will be Saturday at JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the walk will start at 8 a.m. There is no preregistration or registration fee for the walk. ■ Massive Tattoo Studio, 5320 Cameron St., is having a Pink Ink event noon-8 p.m. Saturday with tattoo artists creating pink ribbon and remembrance tattoos. Proceeds will go to the Southern Nevada affiliate of the Komen Foundation. No appointment is necessary (247-6132).
■ A "Bunco or Bust" benefit to raise funds for breast cancer research will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Ballroom at CasaBlanca Resort in Mesquite. Registration fee is $35. For more information, call (888) 711-4653, ext. 41 or 42, or visit www.casablancaresort.com.
■ Season 4 A Cure Cancer Run will be Sunday at the Nevada Cancer Institute's Summerlin campus at 1 Breakthrough Way, near Town Center Drive and Interstate 215. The 5K Run & Fun Walk will feature a 100-yard children's dash, children's activities, carnival games, drawings, live music and a breakfast buffet by Four Seasons' chefs. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., with the run starting at 9 a.m. The children's 100-yard dash will be at 8 a.m. Adult registration is $25 in advance and $40 on Sunday, and includes breakfast. Registration fees for ages 12 and younger are $10 in advance and $15 on Sunday, and includes breakfast. Breakfast and carnival fees are $15 for adults and $10 for children. ■ On Wednesday, "1 a Minute LIVE Supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure" will be presented at 8 p.m. (tape delayed) at the following movie theaters: The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.; Colonnade, 8880 S. Eastern Ave.; Sam's Town, 5111 Boulder Highway; Santa Fe Station, 4949 N. Rancho Drive; South Point, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South; and Village Square, 9400 W. Sahara Ave. The screening will feature a panel discussion on breast cancer survival with Olivia Newton-John, Melissa Etheridge, Deepak Chopra, Namrata Singh Gujral, Barbara Mori and William Baldwin. A docudrama portraying one woman's journey through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, written and directed by Gujral, will follow the discussion. ■ The RTC Viva Bike Vegas 2010, to benefit After-School All-Stars and the Nevada Cancer Institute, will be Oct. 9. The event will feature three rides, including a 23-mile ride, a 50-mile metric century ride and a 115-mile century ride, in addition to bike safety training and children's activities. ■ The East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Brunch for ages 50 and older, featuring information and prizes, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 7. The fee is $3 (229-1515).
■ The Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd., will present the Grapes & Hops Festival, to benefit Par for the Cure, 5-9 p.m. Oct. 9. The event, for those 21 and older, will feature wine and beer tastings, food, live music and a silent auction. Par for the Cure is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research. Tickets purchased in advance are $30 per person or $50 per pair. Tickets are $35 on Oct. 9. ■ The Movement will present the Black & Pink Party, hosted by actor Brian White and featuring live music, food and drink specials, 10 p.m.-3 a.m. Oct. 9 at Crown Nightclub at the Rio, 3700 W. Flamingo Road. The event is for ages 21 and older. Pink and black attire is encouraged. ■ CENTERpiece Gallery at Crystals at CityCenter, 3720 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will host "The Art of Giving" reception and jewelry event 6-8 p.m. Oct. 14. Jewelry designer Chari Cuthbert will showcase her jewelry line, By Chari, which includes a limited-edition bracelet and necklace created in honor of breast cancer survivors and their families. Both pieces will be sold at the gallery Oct. 14-31, with 50 percent of all proceeds from both pieces going to the Nevada Cancer Institute in support of breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. In addition, the gallery will donate 10 percent of all sales to the Nevada Cancer Institute throughout the month of October (739-3314).
■ Ricardo's Mexican Restaurant, 4930 W. Flamingo Road, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the "World's Largest Margarita" Oct. 15-16. The event will feature food and drink specials, live entertainment, celebrity appearances and prize giveaways. Drinks from the "World's Largest Margarita" attempt will be available for purchase, with event proceeds going to the Southern Nevada affiliate of the Komen Foundation.
■ St. Rose Dominican Hospitals will present the second annual Rose Regatta Dragon Boat Race and Festival, to support those affected by breast cancer, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 16 at MonteLago Village and Marina at Lake Las Vegas. The races will feature 60 dragon boat teams with participants from Nevada, Southern California, Arizona, Colorado and Canada. Nine of the teams are comprised solely of breast cancer survivors. The festival also will include a Flowers on the Water ceremony, a Painted Paddles Gallery, the Light the Way lantern tribute, live entertainment and other activities. The event raises funds to support breast cancer services and programs offered by St. Rose Dominican Hospitals and the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Centers of Excellence. ■ The sixth annual Southwest Valley Vons Craft Fair to benefit breast cancer research will be 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 16-17 at the Vons at 8540 W. Desert Inn Road. The craft fair will feature arts and crafts, live music, a drawing and other activities (240-0293).
■ The Justin Timberlake Shriner's Hospital for Children Open will be Oct. 18-24 at the Tournament Players Club in Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. Tickets are $15, with $7.50 of each ticket sold through the Komen Foundation going to its Southern Nevada affiliate. For tickets, call 822-2324.
■ The Hard Rock Cafe Las Vegas, 3771 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will host the Pinktober Breast Cancer Benefit Concert featuring Hedley on Oct. 24. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. On Oct. 30, Delta Nove and Moksha will perform; doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 on the day of the show. ■ The Southern Highlands Golf Club, 1 Robert Trent Jones Lane, will host the Ladies Pink Tee Golf & Social event featuring golf, dinner, live and silent auctions, a fashion show and shopping, on Oct. 26. Golf and dinner tickets are $200, with $150 being donated to the Komen Foundation. Tickets for dinner and shopping are $150, with $100 being donated to the Southern Nevada affiliate of the Komen Foundation. Reservations are necessary by Oct. 22 by calling 263-1000.
■ "Boulder City Goes Passionately Pink" will begin at noon Oct. 29 on the steps of City Hall, 401 California Ave. The event is open to the public. Participants will gather on the steps in pink attire for a photo. Paula Francis will be the keynote speaker, and a cancer survivor will share a story. Following the photo, participants will take part in making a pink human ribbon at Bicentennial Park. Pink boxed lunches, T-shirts and hats will be available for purchase for $10 each, with $5 going to the Southern Nevada affiliate of the Komen Foundation. There also will be a bicycle scavenger hunt around Old Town, and a motorcycle scavenger hunt around Boulder City. Registration for both events will begin at 4 p.m. at the Boulder Dam Brewing Co., 453 Nevada Way. Entry fee is $10, with a portion going to the Southern Nevada affiliate of the Komen Foundation, and the hunts will begin at 5 p.m. Rides are limited to 50 in each group (293-2034).
■ Serenity Tours is offering a "Celebrating Life and Finding a Cure" event featuring a trip to Grand Canyon National Park, via the Mother Road Route 66, and a trip to Bearizona Wildlife Safari Park, 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Oct. 30. Tour price is $119 per person, with 15 percent of proceeds going to the Komen Foundation's Southern Nevada affiliate. ■ Pink Jeep Tours will have its annual "Trek for the Cure" event throughout the month of October. The off-road tour company will donate $5 from the sales of all Red Rock Canyon tours in October to the Nevada Cancer Institute (888-900-4480 or www.pinkjeep.com).
■ Gigi's Cupcakes, 1150 E. Flamingo Road, will donate 50 cents from each sale of a cupcake in October to the Southern Nevada affiliate of the Komen Foundation when customers mention "Susan G. Komen" (735-9783).
■ Throughout October, a portion of proceeds from the sale of the 2011 Fantasy Swimsuit Calendar will benefit the Nevada Cancer Institute. Calendars can be purchased at the Luxor box office, 3900 Las Vegas Blvd. South, or online at www.FantasyLuxor.com.
■ "Bodies ... The Exhibition" at Luxor, 3900 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will offer a buy-one-get-one free promotion to pink-attired Nevada residents throughout October. Residents must wear an outwardly visible piece of pink clothing and show their Nevada ID at the box office (262-4400).
