Outdoor movies shown around valley

If you're looking for a chance to watch a free outdoor movie in the next week, you've got five choices.

"Nancy Drew" will be shown at 8 p.m. today and "Ocean's 13" at 8 p.m. Saturday at The District at Green Valley Ranch, 2235 Village Walk Drive. Free popcorn will be provided. For more information, call 564-8595.

Authors symposium scheduled Saturday

The 2008 African American Authors Symposium is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

"In Firm Pursuit" author Pamela Samuels-Young, "The Mayor's Wife Wore Sapphires" author Martha Tucker, "Fool Me Once" author Marla Everson, and "The Gospel According to My Hair: Spiritual Growth on the Waves of New Growth" author Caarne Elliott are scheduled to appear.

Samuels-Young will host a writing workshop, "How to Write a Book Despite Your Day Job," from 9:30 a.m. to noon. She will deliver a keynote address at 12:30 p.m. that will be followed by presentations by Everson and Elliott.

A panel discussion on book clubs is scheduled, and the authors will be available with books for signing.

The event is free but is limited to 90 participants.
