The story: Unable to recall his military service during Israel's controversial 1982 invasion of Lebanon, filmmaker Ari Folman tracks down friends and fellow veterans to discuss what happened there -- including the massacre of Palestinian refugees by Christian militia.

The buzz: This hauntingly surreal animated Israeli documentary may have lost its bid to win a best foreign-language Academy Award, but it has been collecting awards around the globe all the same, from a Golden Globe to a Writers Guild Award to six Israeli Academy Awards, including best film.
