Authors speak out against film
"Amish Grace," a movie airing Sunday on the Lifetime Movie Network, has drawn criticism. Authors of "Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy," a book about the mass shooting at an Amish school in Pennsylvania in 2006, have distanced themselves from the movie adaptation. The authors say they declined to work with the producers out of respect for the community. Five girls died and five were wounded when Charles Carl Roberts IV barricaded himself inside the West Nickel Mines Amish School. Elizabethtown College professor Donald B. Kraybill, who wrote the book with two co-authors, said publisher Jossey-Bass sold the film rights. They say proceeds will go to charity.
Akon denied visa
Sri Lanka will not issue R&B star Akon a visa to perform at a planned concert after protests over a music video where scantily clad women dance in front of a Buddha statue. Akon has expressed regret and said he was not previously aware of the statue. The concert was scheduled for April, and Akon's booking firm says the show has been postponed because of the outrage toward the singer. The video "Sexy Chick" features women in bikinis dancing at a pool party. A Buddha statue is occasionally visible in the background. Akon said he was "disheartened" to hear of the media attack and didn't mean to offend any religion.
Glover rallies for workers
Cleveland-area workers at a men's suit plant received hugs and moral support from actor Danny Glover on Tuesday. The "Lethal Weapon" star toured the Hugo Boss plant in Brooklyn, Ohio. The plant faces a shutdown next month that would result in the loss of 375 jobs. Glover later had a news conference where he urged Germany's Hugo Boss AG to reverse the shutdown decision. The activist also led a boycott of Hugo Boss formal wear at this year's Academy Awards. Hugo Boss says its shutdown decision stands and the union representing workers rejected concessions.
