Hall of Harmony

Five artists of the doo-wop era will honor the latest inductees of the Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America and showcase existing ones in two concerts at The Venetian Showroom, Friday and Saturday .

Although the tribute show has been an annual tradition during the past 10 years, this will mark its first year in Las Vegas, notes Harvey Robbins, hall of fame founder and president. Previous concerts have been in Boston.

Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners, The Marcels and the Mystics are among the groups scheduled to perform or have some musical representation onstage for the two shows. They will perform hits from the '50s and '60s such as "Pennies from Heaven," "Money Honey," "Blue Moon" and "Heartaches."

All are songs that best represent doo-wop, the musical style that refers to a lead singer with harmony components behind him, Robbins says. Backup singers often sang the sounds "doo-wop." 

The Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America was conceptualized by Robbins 10 years ago. It doesn't have a physical structure, but it does have dozens of members. Three or four groups are chosen for induction each year by a national voting committee, Robbins explains.

"It's just a way to show appreciation for these artists who have given us this music that is part of our American musical culture," Robbins says.

Tickets cost $49.50 and $62.50, plus tax. A VIP ticket, which includes a meet and greet with the artists, is $100 plus tax. Tickets are available at The Venetian box office, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South; by phone at 414-9000; or on the website at venetian.com. The show starts at 7 p.m. each day.
