HBO will bring Burning Man to the comfort of your living room

It’s as close as you’ll probably get to Burning Man without having to deal with the traffic, mud and questionable toilets.

HBO’s upcoming four-part docuseries “The Man Will Burn” will pull from years of video archives of the countercultural festival and Black Rock City, the temporary town erected each year to accommodate 80,000 attendees in the Nevada desert about 110 miles north of Reno in Pershing County.

It also promises exclusive access to Burning Man Project leadership.

Episodes will trace Burning Man’s growth “from an anti-establishment group in San Francisco, founded by Larry Harvey in the 1980s, to a multi-million-dollar event with thousands of attendees and the backing of billionaire tech donors,” according to an episode synopsis.

The docuseries will focus on the upheaval during the pandemic, including the canceled festivals, the renegade offshoot festival and the return to normalcy — at least by Burning Man standards.

“The Man Will Burn” debuts at 9 p.m. July 9 on HBO.
