99 words about the quick demise of HBO’s ‘The Newsroom’

Will McAvoy, we hardly knew ye.
Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” debuted to a wave of excitement. Now, it’s kicking off its third and final season (9 p.m. Sunday, HBO), and it’s only been given six episodes.
The time lag between actual events and their depiction often felt like pious Monday-morning quarterbacking. And the behind-the-scenes look at cable news rarely jelled.
In season three, though, the characters, led by Jeff Daniels’ McAvoy, are more enjoyable than ever.
The rest of the show is still kind of a mess.
But it’s one of the most elegant, eloquent messes you’ll ever see.
