The Atlas Moth aims to invigorate

Their sound is suggestive of winter in their native Chicago: cold, overcast, something to be endured.

But like the season in question, there’s a beauty in The Atlas Moth’s harshness.

The band’s haunting, atmospheric art metal tends to unfold at a deliberate, pulse slowing pace, with resonant, cleanly sung vocals alternated with strangulated shrieks.

Synthesizers add texture; songs congeal with one another into a moody whole.

Thing is, though, The Atlas Moth are no sullen misanthropes.

The group’s latest record, “The Old Believer,” aims to stir and inspire.

“Free yourself from what wears you down / Chase the sun each and every day,” they sing on “Blood Will Tell,” raising spirits while lowering heart rates.
