Rock in Rio: Saturday gets loud
Friday night’s festive party attire was replaced with 50 shades of black on Saturday as the music went from rock to RRRAAWWKK.
Raindrops began to fall during Hollywood Undead’s 5:30 p.m. set but stopped almost immediately as though they were scared off by what they found once they hit the crowd.
Orange County, Calif.’s Of Mice & Men and rockers Coheed and Cambria kicked things off on the secondary stage before yielding it to Sepultura and guitar god Steve Vai.
There was a sweet spot between the sonic onslaught of that stage and the EDM area — where Brazilian DJ duo Felguk was sampling a bit of The 45 King’s “The 900 Number,” better known to fans of “Yo! MTV Raps” as the Ed Lover song — that made for one of the most discordant mashups you’ll ever hear.
Devil horns and middle fingers flew during Hollywood Undead’s raucous act, taking a break as the L.A. rockers covered a bit of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.”
The only negative vibes from the evening so far came when Rise Against singer Tim McIlrath mentioned next weekend’s pop theme.
Still to come: Deftones, Linkin Park and Metallica.
