Plenty of neighborhood pools mean there’s no reason to roast this summer

Is the only pool at your house the one on the roof after it rains? Good news: Relief is out there just waiting for you to dive in.
The valley is dotted with 27 open public pools. That means there’s probably one nearby. Or maybe you have special pool needs that make a longer drive worthwhile.
Here’s our guide to what’s what on the public waterfront.
LAS VEGAS
• Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave., 229-1532
Hours: Noon-5 p.m. Mon.-Sat. through Aug. 15.
Admission: $2, $1 for ages 4-17, $1.50 for 50 and older, free for younger than 4
It’s next to Fremont Middle School.
• Doolittle Pool, 1950 J St., 229-6398.
Hours: Noon-5 p.m. Mon.-Sat. through Aug. 15, Aug. 22, Aug. 29 and Sept. 5
Admission: $2, $1 for ages 4-17, $1.50 for 50 and older, free for younger than 4
This is especially attractive for families, with its spiral slide and zero-depth play features, including tipping buckets and sprayers.
• Garside Pool, 300 S. Torrey Pines Drive, 229-6393
Hours: Noon-5 p.m. Mon.- Sat. through Aug. 15
Admission: $2, $1 for ages 4-17, $1.50 for 50 and older, free for younger than 4
In the parking lot of Garside Middle School, this pool is the city’s oldest, built in 1971. That’s why it’s the only one without heating (though that’s probably a good thing when your bathing suit has melted into your skin).
• Carlos L. Martinez and Dario J. Hall Family Pool at Freedom Park, 889 N. Pecos Road, 229-1755.
Hours: noon-5 p.m. daily (and 7-9 p.m. Monday) through Aug. 16, Aug. 22 and 23, Aug. 29 and 30, and Sept. 5-7.
Admission: $2, $1 for ages 4-17, $1.50 for 50 and older, free for younger than 4

Hours: 8 a.m.-4 p.m., 7-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri., noon-6 p.m. Sat. and Sun.; 4-7 p.m. Mon.-Fri. for those 18 and older (lap swimming only), year-round
Admission: $2, $1 for ages 4-17, $1.50 for 50 and older, free for younger than 4
The city’s only indoor pool also is the only one with lap swimming. (Even though the others have lanes, ropes within them separate shallow water from deep.)
• Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1488
Hours: Noon-4 p.m. Mon.-Sat. through Aug. 15
Admission: $2, $1 for ages 4-17, $1.50 for 50 and older, free for younger than 4
On the Palo Verde High School campus, this is the only public pool in Summerlin. And this is its last summer in the sun. Next summer, after renovations, it will reopen as an indoor pool.
CLARK COUNTY POOLS IN LAS VEGAS
• Cambridge Water Park, 3930 Cambridge St., 735-1664
Hours: Noon-4 p.m. Tues.-Fri, noon-6 p.m. Sat. and Sun. through Aug. 23
Admission: $3, $2 for ages 3-17, $1 for 50 and older, free for 2 and younger
For the kiddies, this one features zero-depth entry and a spiral slide.
• Cora Coleman Senior Center Pool, 2100 Bonnie Lane, 455-2120
Hours: 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m. Mon., Wed. and Fri.; 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Tues. and Thurs. through Aug. 23.
Admission: $1
This one’s for people 50 and older, as evidenced by the 87-degree water temperature.
• Desert Breeze Aquatic Facility, 8275 Spring Mountain Road, 455-7798
Admission: $3, $2 for ages 3-17, $1 for 50 and older, free for 2 and younger
Indoor pool hours: 1-4 p.m. Mon., Wed., Fri. and Sat.; 8-9 p.m. Tues. and Thurs. Adults only 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon, Wed. and Fri., and 6 a.m.-10 a.m. Tues. and Thurs. through Aug. 23.
Outdoor pool hours: Noon-6 p.m. Sat. and Sun. and noon-4 p.m. Mon.-Thurs. through Aug. 23.
The outdoor pool has zero-depth entry for the kiddies, as well as tube and spiral slides.
• Parkdale Water Park, 3200 Ferndale St., 455-7523
Hours: Noon-6 p.m. Sat. and Sun., noon-4 p.m. Tues.-Fri. through Aug. 23.
Admission: $3, $2 for ages 3-17, $1 for 50 and older, free for 2 and younger
Adjacent to Parkdale Community Center off the Boulder Strip, this pool boasts a spiral slide.
• Sunrise Pool, 2240 Linn Lane, 455-7610
Hours: Noon-4 p.m. Tues.-Sun. through Aug. 23
Admission: $1.50, 50 cents for ages 3-17, $1 for 50 and older, free for 2 and younger
In Sunrise Park, this is a small rectangular pool with diving board.
• Sunset Pool, 2601 E. Sunset Road, 455 -8225
Hours: Noon-4 p.m. Tues-Fri. through Aug. 23
Admission: $1.50, 50 cents for ages 3-17, $1 for 50 and older, free for 2 and younger
In Sunset Park next to the lake, it also features a diving board. This pool is popular for parties.
• Walnut Water Park, 3085 Cecile Ave., 455-8422

Close to the Cheyenne campus of the College of Southern Nevada, this pool features a spiral slide and zero-depth entry.

A quieter pool, and kidney-shaped if that kind of stuff matters to you.
HENDERSON
• Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Road, 267-4080

Admission: $3; $2 for ages 3-17 and 50 and older; free for 2 and younger
Kid-friendly atmosphere with a raindrop waterfall, water play equipment and a three-loop water slide.
• BMI Outdoor Pool, 105 W. Basic Road, 267-4029
Hours: 12:15-4:15 p.m. Mon.-Fri., noon-5 p.m. Sat. and Sun. through Sept. 7
Admission: $1, free for ages 2 and younger
Adjacent to the Downtown Recreation Center, this complex features a wading pool, diving tank and recreational pool with lap lanes.

• Henderson Multigenerational Competition Pool, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway, 267-5825

Admission: $1, free for ages 2 and younger
This year-round outdoor pool hosts local and national swim meets throughout the year. It’s a 50-meter competitive pool with 25-yard short course and 50-meter long course capabilities. Its minimum depth is 7 feet, so it is for the more serious or experienced swimmer.
• Henderson Multigenerational Indoor Pool, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway, 267-4824
Hours: 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat. through Sept. 7
Admission: $1, free for ages 2 and younger
This year-round indoor pool has a step entry, making access easier for children and seniors with mobility problems.
• Silver Springs Outdoor Pool, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, 267-5719
Hours: 12:15-4:15 p.m. Mon.-Fri., noon-5 p.m. Sat. through Sept. 7
Admission: $1, free for ages 2 and younger
Across the street from Silver Springs Park, this complex features a diving tank, kids’ wading pool and a recreational pool with lap lanes.
• Wells Outdoor Pool, 1608 Moser Drive, 566-2200
Hours: 12:15-4:15 p.m. Mon.-Fri., noon-5 p.m. Sat. and Sun. through Sept. 7
Admission: $1, free for ages 2 and younger
Next to Wells Park, this pool draws many kids and teens.

The pool has a shallow training area, which often is used for water fitness classes, as well as 25-yard competition lanes.

NORTH LAS VEGAS

Admission: free
Traditional family pool has two diving boards. It is adjacent to the Neighborhood Recreation Center, which has a senior program.

Hours: Noon-4 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 1-5 p.m. Sat. through Aug. 8.
Admission: free
This L-shaped, 25-meter pool with 1-meter boards is popular with divers. (The L is a diving tank.)

Hours: Noon-4 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tues. and Thurs., noon-6 p.m. Sat., 1-5 p.m. Sun.
Admission: $3, $2 for ages 3-17 and 55 and older, free for ages 2 and younger.
Kid-friendly facility, with zero-depth entry and a slide.

Hours: Noon-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tues.-Thurs., 1-5 p.m. Sat. through Aug. 22
Admission: Free
Competition pool good for laps, but with minimal free swim.
