“Please Give” a comedy of bad manners

Movie: “Please Give”

When: Opening Friday at Suncoast

Cast: Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, Amanda Peet, Ann Guilbert

Director: Nicole Holofcener

The story: While waiting for their elderly neighbor to die so they can expand their apartment by annexing hers, a New York City husband and wife butt heads with the neighbor’s granddaughters.

The buzz: The latest from writer-director Nicole Holofcener, this comedy of bad Manhattan manners debuted at this year’s Sundance film festival. As usual, it stars Keener, who has turned up in Holofcener’s three previous features: 1996’s “Walking and Talking,” 2001’s “Lovely and Amazing” and 2006’s “Friends With Money.” Keener’s castmates also have earned acclaim, from Hall (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona’s” memorable Vicky) to 83-year-old Guilbert, who’s been a regular on such TV sitcoms as “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (62 episodes as Millie Helper) and “The Nanny” (56 episodes as Yetta Rosenberg).
