‘Phantom’s’ gal pal sings ‘Outside the Lines’ at library concert

"Some people will come because I'm in 'Phantom,' and I think they'll be surprised," says Kristi Holden, who stars as Christine Daae, the Disfigured One's dewy objet d'amour in "Phantom -- The Las Vegas Spectacular."

Emerging from the masked dude's subterranean lair, Holden will be -- as her concert title promises -- "Singing Outside the Lines" in a performance Sunday at the Clark County Library Theater to benefit Family Promise of Las Vegas, which assists local homeless families.

"I love singing other types of music, and I wanted to challenge myself to step outside of myself and this soprano box and sing other types of genres, other than just in my shower or my car," says Holden, whose repertoire will range from classical offerings to tunes by John Denver, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen and, for good measure, a little Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as tributes to movie musicals such as "Singing in the Rain."

Yes, there's the trained voice, but don't overlook the flying feet, as Holden will be joined by other performers, including Rick Faugno of "Jersey Boys," for a bit of tap dancing, a skill she's admired since her Colorado childhood, watching reruns of that weekly hour of wholesomeness, "The Lawrence Welk Show."

"I always watched those with my grandparents, and Arthur Duncan inspired me to learn how to tap dance," she says, referring to the first African-American performer on Welk's program.

As for switching vocal gears, Holden says a touch of fear is an ideal motivator as she ventures into popular standards. "Belting scares me the most," Holden says. "It's a very different technique, and I do have a number where I do that. If I can get through it, I'll be most proud of that."

Presenting -- without crashing chandeliers, gondola rides and unrequited love -- the Phantom's sweetie, above ground at last.
