Need to shorten a URL, but don’t like the mishmash of numbers and letters some sites give you? Check out www.socuteurl.com. Enter a Web site address you’d like shortened, and this site will give it an adorable name involving words such as peppydog and mashygooboo.

Have a title for a story but not the guts of it? Over at www.nameyourtale.com, you provide the title and someone will write a 100-word story based on it. The authors at the site don’t do their job halfway, either. For example, the title “No, I Won’t Eat That Doughnut” generated a tale of office boredom and an intense description of the pastry. Submit your own title or just enjoy the stories.

Do you have a user name you use for everything? Are you often frustrated when you sign up for something and your handle has already been taken? Stop the madness with namechk.com, which combs a variety of popular sites (such as eBay, Facebook and Twitter, among others) and finds which sites already have a user with your preferred name. Or, use it to see if your name is available and snatch it up before anyone else can get to it.
