One-act plays taking the stage at CSN

A workshop featuring a series of one-act plays will be presented Friday through Sunday at the Backstage Theater at the College of Southern Nevada, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.

The One Act Workshop was founded by theater instructor Mindy Woodhead to provide students with the opportunity to improve their acting skills and gain some directing experience, says the program’s co-advisor, Pat Lusk.

“There are only a couple of productions per semester, but there are many students who want the opportunity to perform,” Lusk says. “This provides them with that opportunity.

More than 30 students and several members of the local theater community will participate.

Seven plays, each ranging from 10 to 20 minutes, will be performed, including “On the Edge,” by Craig Pospisil; “Affair Play,” by Jessica Goldberg; “The Class,” by John Jory; and “Woman of the Theatre,” by Julie Jensen.

“The Popcorn Sonata,” by Jenny Lyn Bader, tells the story of a father and a baby sitter, who has a special insight into childhood and what children like, Lusk says.

One comedy, “On the Edge,” is about a desperate student on a ledge.

While the one-act plays and writers may not be familiar to theatergoers, the themes and characters will be, Lusk says.

The One Act Workshop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5. For reservations or more information, call 651-5483 or visit csn.edu/pac.
