Toast Dad on Father’s Day with a perfect martini
Sunday is Father’s Day. Sunday also is National Martini Day.
In honor of this near-perfect blending of complementary holiday observances, we asked a few valley restaurants known for their drinks to offer their takes on the manliest cocktail.
Traditionally a mixture of gin and vermouth — the proper split has fomented arguments that make the Hatfields and the McCoys look like a playground dispute — the martini’s name lately has been appropriated to describe drinks that include add-ons nobody from “Mad Men” ever would have recognized.
There’s a fine line between a modified martini and a drink that no longer merits the name. But that’s a discussion for another time.
Instead, we offer three variations on a classic martini theme.
There’s What Oscar Drinks, named after Las Vegas’ former mayor/internationally known martini aficionado Oscar Goodman, as served at Oscar’s Steakhouse in the Plaza, 1 S. Main St. General Manager Jason Gordon says it’s one of the restaurant’s best-selling drinks and, as the recipe reveals, one that “isn’t for the faint of heart.”
From Triple George Grill, 201 N. Third St., comes the Yes Please, one of the restaurant’s signature drinks that offers hints of grapefruit and ginger.
And, from the Peppermill Fireside Lounge, 2985 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is a gin martini given a Bellini twist.
Happy Father’s Day, and enjoy your martini.
