Norah Jones to premiere at famed Las Vegas Strip theater
Norah Jones shared her distinctive voice on her 2002 breakout album, “Come Away With Me.” That voice and her penetrating songwriting have led to international success. Jones won five of her 10 Grammy Awards with that record, which won Album of the Year and has sold more than 27 million copies, achieving diamond status.
From that release, Jones rose to pop-powerhouse status, appearing at the Venetian Theatre on May 9.
This is the 47-year-old’s first show at The Venetian (tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. PT Friday, go to Ticketmaster.com or VenetianLasVegas.com for intel). As even casual Vegas historians know, the hotel stands on hallowed ground, site of the Rat Pack-favored resort the Sands and the Copa Room.
There is a tangential connection: Jones’ latest single is a cover of the Frank and Nancy Sinatra classic “Somethin’ Stupid” performed by her and Joshua Homme on her podcast, “Norah Jones Is Playing Along.”
Jones has sold 52 million albums, piling up 10 billion streams internationally. Born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, Jones is the daughter of the late Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar.
The two reconciled their estranged relationship when Jones was a teenager and were back in communication when Shankar died in 2012.
“All families have their complicated corners. It was challenging when we were reunited when I was 18. It took us all some time to feel comfortable with each other,” Jones told Vogue India in August 2020. “The success of my first record and the sudden public interest in our relationship complicated everything. I was trying to tell my story and be true to myself while still trying to convey a sense of privacy regarding my unique family dynamic.”
Jones was long established at the time of that reconciliation. Billboard named her the top jazz artist of the 2000s and 60th on Billboard’s Artists of the 2000s Decade list. Last summer, she released a single, her first collaboration with John Legend, “Summertime Blue.”
